The Team Gap Index aggregates each team member's Showrunner Gap Index result into a single coverage map. It shows your team's average coverage across the eleven roles and highlights the roles your team disagrees about owning, which is where the conversation about ownership should start.
One person's Gap Index score tells you how they see the function. It cannot tell you whether the people around them see it the same way. The Team Gap Index takes the individual result codes from several people and merges them. You get the team's average score for each of the eleven roles, a combined total out of 132, the band that total falls in, and a ranked list of the roles with the widest spread between respondents.
The spread is the point. When four people score the Casting Director role 11 out of 12 and two score it 2, the team averages a respectable 8 and nobody sees a problem, though ownership is plainly unclear. A role everyone scores low is a known gap. A role the team splits on is an unexamined one.
It is built for the people who run or depend on a learning-and-development function: a CHRO or VP People deciding where to invest, a Head of L&D who suspects the team describes the function differently than they do, and COOs and operating partners at multi-site companies who want to know whether each office would answer the same way. Anyone on the team can take part. A mix of respondents from L&D, HR, and operations gives a more honest picture than L&D alone.
Each individual result is scored from 0 to 3 per statement, four statements per role, so every role has a subtotal from 0 to 12 and the full function totals 132. The Team Gap Index averages each role's subtotal across all respondents. The team total is the sum of those eleven averages, placed in the same bands as the individual score: Unstaffed (0 to 43), Ad Hoc (44 to 87), Emerging (88 to 110), and Showrunner-Grade (111 to 132). Disagreement is the standard deviation of the respondents' subtotals for a role, and roles are ranked from the widest spread to the narrowest.
Result codes are decoded and aggregated in your browser. They are not sent to a server, and the Team Gap Index does not ask for names or email addresses. Start with the individual Showrunner Gap Index, or read The L&D Showrunner for the argument behind the eleven roles.
The Team Gap Index aggregates each team member's individual Showrunner Gap Index result into one view. It shows the team's average coverage across the eleven roles and, most usefully, the roles the team disagrees about owning.
High disagreement on a role means its ownership is genuinely unclear: some of the team thinks it is covered, others say it is empty. That is the most useful place to start a conversation about who owns what.
